What is balayage?
While balayage is a distinctly modern trend, it is, in fact, a free-form hair colouring technique developed back in the 1970s. Despite its age, the appeal of balayage remains timeless thanks to its ability to give hair a sun-kissed, natural lustre. No wonder its popularity has exploded in recent times, with some of the world’s most famous women showing off its stunning effects. Julia Roberts, Gisele Bundchen and Sarah Jessica Parker have all rocked this wildly popular look.
How is it done?
In contrast to more traditional forms of hair colour, balayage is applied using a number of techniques, usually freehand with a brush, rather than with foils or cap highlighting. This means you have nearly endless possibilities for your look, from hard blonde tips to a softer, graded transition of hues only a couple of shades lighter than your natural colour.
Why do we love it?
It’s artistic, it’s free form and stylish, totally “in,” and best of all, completely low maintenance. Generally, you will need up to three appointments of the balayage effect to reach the desired intensity. Unlike traditionally coloured hair, however, once the desired colour has been achieved, there is no need to maintain consistency by re-touching unsightly regrowth. You can simply let the balayage grow out and even let the colour fade gradually, depending on the intensity of colour applied. Spending less time and money on maintaining your look? That’s a win-win situation in our book.
Is there any reason that balayage won’t work for me?
We’ve thought about this and…nope! There is really no downside to jumping on the balayage bandwagon. There is just so much appeal to this look for almost any hair style. While balayage is applied to best effect on longer, flowing hair styles, it can be used on short pixie styles or bob cuts too. These styles will need stronger colour or “blocking” to really show off the technique, but almost any cut will let you show off burnished, stunning locks. Whatever your desired look, we know you will love the variety and depth that balayage offers.
